Crockpot Mulled Wine Recipe
This Crockpot Mulled Wine recipe is ideal for entertaining because it’s an easy, hands-off way to make a warm, spiced wine. A sachet of warm spices with red wine creates an inviting drink for fall and winter.
I found this mulled wine recipe a few years ago when looking through my Mom’s recipes. We were having a small family gathering, and I really didn’t want to spend money on stocking a bar. So I decided to make this crockpot mulled wine.
Well, it was a hit, and I was glad I actually doubled the recipe. It’s now become an annual offering at our winter gathering with family and friends. I even took it to a Super Bowl party at the neighbors’. I’m often told people love mulled wine, but it’s something they don’t think about serving. Here’s your reminder that mulled wine is easy, delicious, and usually well-received by party guests.

Why You’ll Love Crockpot Mulled Wine
- Just a few simple ingredients are all it takes to make this warm wine cocktail.
- The slow cooker keeps it warm without having to babysit it on the stovetop.
- Easy clean up since everything is put into the crockpot.
- Makes your house smell amazing while it simmers.
- Perfect for any winter gathering, including the Super Bowl, Galentine’s Day, Christmas, or any other winter party.
Ingredients
Just seven ingredients, with one being optional, are necessary for crockpot mulled wine.
- 750ml Red Wine – I used a Pinot Noir, but you could use a Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon.
- Sugar – this is optional
- Orange Juice
- Orane Zest
- Whole Star Anise
- Whole Cloves
- Whole Cinnamon Sticks
What is a spice sachet?
A spice sachet is when you take a number of spices, wrap them in cheesecloth, and secure it with butcher’s or kitchen twine.
You can also make an herb sachet filled with herbs for soups and stews.
You can see from the photo that I was out of cheesecloth, so I used two coffee filters with great success. The crockpot mulled wine was delightfully spiced.
Serving Ideas
- I garnished the mugs with an orange wedge. You could also garnish with a cinnamon stick.
- Serve with holiday cookies, rosemary cashews or sugared pecans, or a meat and cheese tray.
- Pair crockpot mulled wine with savory appetizers, such as a cranberry pecan cheese ball or apple sausage pastry bites.
- It’s ideal for winter celebrations, holidays, or a warm night in when the temperatures are chilly.
How do you store mulled wine?
If you have any leftover mulled wine, store it in the refrigerator for up to two days. Reheat gently on the stovetop, but don’t allow it to boil.
More Wine Cocktails
Wine cocktails are something I like serving for parties. My red wine cocktail is ideal for summer entertaining, as is white wine sangria.
What type of wine is best for mulled wine?
Red wine, that isn’t sweet, is best for this crockpot mulled wine. Consider using Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, or Zinfandel.
Does mulled wine lose alcohol in the slow cooker?
As long as the mixture doesn’t boil, most of the alcohol remains.
Can I skip the sugar?
Absolutely! The orange juice will add sweetness too.
How long can mulled wine stay in the slow cooker?
The flavor will be best if you serve it within 4 hours.
